LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Naturalization Consortium and the Southern California chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association will host a free citizenship-application workshop on Oct. 18.

The workshop will be at the Legal Aid Foundation, 1102 S. Crenshaw Blvd., in Los Angeles. It begins at 9 a.m.

Staff and volunteers from LACNC’s three member agencies the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, International Rescue Committee and Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles will assist applicants in completing the required forms. Volunteer attorneys will counsel individuals on citizenship requirements.

The service is provided to residents of certain parts of Los Angeles County. All applicants must pay the required $675 application/"biometrics" fee (applicants 75 or older pay $595) and bring two passport-style photos.

Applicants who attend the workshop will receive free study materials to help them prepare for the new citizenship examination, which U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services began implementing on Oct. 1. The new exam focuses on fundamental concepts of American democracy and rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Before making an appointment for the workshop with APALC, prospective applicants should verify their eligibility for naturalization (particularly their English proficiency) by visiting www.uscis.gov/naturalization. The top reason for applicant denials is the ability to speak, read and write basic English, workshop organizers said.

Interested applicants must make an appointment by calling (213) 977-7500, Ext. 217 for English or (323) 801-7923 for Vietnamese.
