HÀ N?I — Vi?t Nam is preparing to allow the establishment of a third private airline, to be named Mekong Aviation, a government official said.

Mekong Aviation Joint Stock Co., which will have a registered capital of $12 million, is seeking government permission to set up the airline, said L?i Xuân Thành, deputy general director of Vi?t Nam’s Civil Aviation Administration.

"According to Vi?t Nam law, Prime Minister Nguy?n T?n Dung will decide (on whether to) issue the license for establishing the new airline, which will be based in Phú Qu?c island in Kiên Giang province," Thành told Dow Jones Newswires.

If cleared, Mekong Aviation will start its domestic operation from 2010 with flights between Hà N?i and local destinations. It will expand operations to overseas markets later, Thành said. The company is expected to operate smaller aircraft, such as the Bombadier, Embraer or ATR 72, he said.

Currently, Vi?t Nam has three air carriers that have state stakes Vi?t Nam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific Airlines and VASCO and two private airlines, Vietjet Air and Speed Up.

Mekong Aviation officials weren’t reachable for comment.
