Chi Nguyễn is a familiar face to many Americans.
Last year, she appeared in a television commercial with golfer Tiger Woods, selected as part of the Target “Start Something” program, which inspires young people to take action in their community.
Through participation, Chi learned more about how to prepare and promote a community-service project, in this case, the annual concert she and her sister organize for the children’s shelter in Việt Nam.
At the end of the Start Something program, she applied for a scholarship for a specific activity. Her dream? To continue music classes to perfect her art for future concerts. She received funds for a year of piano lessons.
She also was one of four participants selected to star in an ad with one of the most recognized athletes in the world, whose Tiger Woods Foundation joins with Target in the partnership.
“He was very gracious,” she said following her moment in the limelight. “He made us all feel really important.” |

Danh and Kim Nguyễn told their young daughters about life in Việt Nam, about friends who were poor and had to send their children to work, instead of to school. They used pictures on television of starving children in Africa to start conversations with their girls about hunger in their own homeland. They told tale after tale of poverty.
