Người tị nạn Việt Nam đã làm nên cộng đồng trẻ tuổi nhất trong lịch sử tị nạn và di dân Hoa Kỳ. Ba mươi năm chiếm gần nửa đời người, nhưng đối với một cộng đồng, 30 năm là khoảng thời gian chập chững tập đi và tập nói. Nguồn gốc tị nạn, hoàn cảnh tị nạn và quá trình thành hình các cộng đồng tị nạn Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ có thể được xem là có một không hai trong lịch sử nhân loại. Và trong khi chúng ta chập chững tập đi, “người ta” đã bắt đầu quan sát chúng ta, để tìm hiểu về “chúng ta” trong bối cảnh một xã hội đa văn hóa. Xét trong một chừng mực nhất định, bất cứ những ai đang viết về chúng ta, dù ở khía cạnh nhỏ nhất hay lớn nhất, họ đang viết về lịch sử của chính cộng đồng tị nạn Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ và trên toàn thế giới.

Thư viện Ðông Nam Châu Á tại Ðại Học UCI và một số thư viên khác trên toàn Hoa Kỳ đang lưu giữ một nguồn tài liệu khổng lồ liên quan đến mọi khía cạnh của cuộc sống di dân và tị nạn. Có hàng trăm tác phẩm khảo luận, nghiên cứu và hàng ngàn bài báo viết về cộng đồng Việt Nam đang được lưu giữ tại thư viện Ðại Học UCI. Trong số ấy, chúng tôi xin được lần lượt liệt kê khoảng 300 luận án và nghiên cứu hoàn tất trong 30 năm qua về người tị nạn Việt Nam. Trong số này, một số tác phẩm không chỉ liên quan đến người tị nạn, các đề tài nghiên cứu liên quan đến Việt Nam nói chung cũng được đề cập đến. Một số lớn các tác phẩm này là các luận án tiến sĩ, cao học tại các đại học trên toàn quốc. Một phần khác là các nghiên cứu được thực hiện bởi các cơ quan chính phủ cũng như tư nhân có nhu cầu tìm hiểu về người tị nạn Việt Nam nói riêng và Ðông Nam Châu Á nói riêng. Trong danh sách dưới đây, quí vị có thể dễ dàng nhận ra rất nhiều tên tác giả Hoa Kỳ, Trung Hoa, Nhật Bản, Ðại Hàn bên cạnh tên các tác giả người Việt Nam.
