WESTMINSTER, Calif. (NV) ― Nguoi Viet Daily News, the largest Vietnamese overseas daily newspaper, is holding a writing competition for Vietnamese American students nationwide to encourage them to write and be creative via the newspaper.
Students in grades kindergarten through 12 are encouraged to submit their thoughts and ideas – via stories, essays, editorials, political cartoons, rap lyrics, video, poetry or cultural reviews – of any topic to the newspaper, either in English or Vietnamese.
“The newspaper wants to create an opportunity for parents and students to exchange their ideas and experiences on the newspaper platform,” said Ngô Nhân Dụng , editor in chief.
For the contest, the finalists will be awarded a small stipend and their writings will be published on Nguoi Viet newspaper both in print and online editions. The work students submit will be judged by the newsroom staff at Nguoi Viet Daily News, community partners, outside educators and related experts. The deadlines are December 31, March 31, June 30, and September 30.
Hearing from the younger generations of Vietnamese American is an important part of the mission of Nguoi Viet Daily News to be a center of information and resources for the community. The newspaper started in December 1978 with just four pages weekly as a place of information for new arrivals from Vietnam and from refugee camps around the world. Now, the newspaper is the first and the largest newspaper published in Vietnamese in the United States.
The Vietnamese American communities in the United States, especially Little Saigon, Calif., have flourished from thousands of refugees in early 1975 to more than 1.5 million immigration and refugees.
