From the moment I stepped out of the plane, I could instantly feel the infamous heat and humidity of Vietnam. I had been born and raised in Vietnam since I was 3, yet everything I saw from the first car ride around Saigon at night was so foreign to me. Every building was packed together like as if a toddler had a set of Lego bricks to put together without instruction. It was very late at night during the car ride, yet many people were still awake outside of their homes or businesses socializing.

The following day, I experienced first-hand the chaos of Vietnam’s roads. It’s a stereotype that Asians don’t make the best drivers but seeing how traffic moved in Vietnam cemented that idea in my head for the duration of my trip. People were cutting each other off with only honks being used to prevent crashes, and the traffic lights acted more like suggestions than commands. Personal cars were a rarity as practically anyone who owned one used it as a taxi or Grab car. For most people, they rode motorcycles which were often old and dainty yet littered the narrow streets of Saigon. As hectic as the roads were, each taxi ride arrived at the destination quickly and the fare was often quite cheap.

After a few days getting situated in Saigon, my family headed out towards Da Lat as my mother wanted us to experience how cool and refreshing it was there. My expectations were shattered the moment we arrived towards Da Lat’s center as it was piled with buildings like that of Saigon, albeit in a more organized manner. However, we began to explore the further regions of Da Lat and the natural areas which were in fact very breezy and cool. I was disappointed by the daunting amount of people who were at each destination point, and even more by the amount of litter and smoking near waterfalls or gardens. Nevertheless, I found my experience at Da Lat much more relaxing and calming than that of Saigon.

Upon returning to Saigon with the refresher from Da Lat, my extended family began to take me on more adventures around the city and opened my eyes towards the many aspects of Saigon. We went to many modernized places in Saigon like a millionaire’s house, Saigon Center, and many tasty foreign restaurants. I also visited Ben Thanh where I silently giggled at all the tourist being fooled by merchants into paying for a higher price than they should have paid for souvenirs. All the places I visited this time around in Saigon reignited my interest in Vietnam and made the trip much more enjoyable than it had been in the beginning.

Near the end of my vacation, my family visited Can Tho to see my dad’s home city. The ride there was terribly bumpy and long causing me to have an irritating headache for much of the time there. It was nice to see my aunts, uncles, and cousins who I barely remembered and to see the area and conditions my father grew up in. The area reminded me much more of the Little Saigon area than actual Saigon did, and that was quite comforting.

Upon my return, I thought of my experience in Vietnam. I witnessed the process of westernization unfold within Saigon, the ageing natural beauty of Da Lat, and the easiness of Can Tho. I thought of aesthetic cafes I visited, the intriguing food I ate, and the eccentric people I met and family I got reacquainted with. I thought of how strange everything seemed to me at first, and I thought of the strange feeling I had leaving Vietnam.)
