5 smartphone apps that make college easier

By William Boyles, The Arkansas Traveler

Not all apps are created equal. These are five that might just make your college life a whole lot more productive and enjoyable.

Flashcard Touch by Agilis Lab

You’ve probably used flashcards more than a few times, but what if you had them on your phone and didn’t have to kill any trees? This simple app is deceptively useful for college students since it’s always on hand and you can easily copy and paste questions and answers straight from the browser in multiple languages. It’s a little hit or miss, but you can also choose from thousands of pre-made card sets on a wide range of subjects that can be downloaded inside the app. Sharing is available between phones and through Dropbox.

Sleepmaker by Jenny Apps

College students are no strangers to insomnia. If you’re the type that needs some kind of white noise to sleep, there are plenty of options available, even YouTube, but the one I use in my daily life is Sleepmaker by Jenny Apps. The app avoids problems like sudden interruptions and requiring your phone’s backlight to be on, which can plague solutions like YouTube, and can even run in the background of other apps. The selection is also large, ranging from beach noises to storm sounds, so you’re bound to find one you like. The only major issues with the free version are a 45 minute cap and nonexistent playback options, so you might consider either the full version or more advanced software.

Can I Stream It? by Urban Pixels

Streaming has come a long way as a replacement for television and rental movies but it still isn’t always easy to tell what you can watch where. Urban Pixels has tackled this obstacle to great effect, letting you see who has what you want to watch, how much it will cost you and what other people are watching. You can also set any number of reminders for when shows and movies become available on the myriad of watching services offered, like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. It won’t guarantee the program will be added, but it will help take a lot of the guesswork out of what should be a relaxing experience.
