HOUSTON – Huy Dao is just a junior at the University of Houston Hilton School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, but he has applied for a few jobs. When he does, he occasionally gets asked to like the employer’s page.
An employer on a social media website.
According to a survey by CareerBuilder, almost forty percent of employers do use social media to check out applicants and for 65 percent of them, Facebook is the go-to social media platform. They ask potential employees to like their company pages or join their social circles to get access to their information.
But those companies may want to think twice if they are trying to attract millenials like Dao or Univ. of Houston senior Caroline Coles who is actively searching and knows what kind of employer she wants.
“I would pick the company that would not go through my Facebook page. I feel like I need to be protected in that part of my life. That’s personal and my work should be separate from that,” says Coles.
