Sculpture recognizing Vietnamese troops dedicated

A memorial dedicated to remembering both American and South Vietnamese soldiers who served side by side in the war has been dedicated in Wichita, Kan.

The Vietnamese American Community Memorial sculpture now sits on the banks of the Arkansas River.  Members of the South Vietnamese community of Wichita paid for the memorial.

The ceremony, timed to mark the anniversary of the Fall of Sai Gon, included Vietnamese touches. Vietnamese music played, as did the national anthems of the United States and of South Viet Nam. Women wore ao dai, and the South Vietnamese flag flew at half-staff.

The memorial plaque marking the sculpture was written in English and Vietnamese and recognizes the sacrifices made by soldiers from both sides.

Kansas has a growing Vietnamese population. The Vietnamese population outnumbers all other Asian groups in the state.
