The sentence of Philip Nguyen, convicted in the killing a detective in training in New South Wales, Australia, has been successfully appealed by prosecutors in that country. In fact, Nguyen, 58, now will spend at least six more years behind bars, the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal has ruled.

Constable Bill Crews was fatally hit by a stray bullet during a drug raid.
Nguyen, whom police said was a drug dealer, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and for wounding the officer last March. While he did not fire the shot that killed Constable Bill Crews, he fired at officers during a raid – an action that ultimately led to the death of Crews.
In the incident, Crews fired back, as did a fellow detective, who actually fired the shot that hit Crews in the neck, killing him.
The prosecutors appealed the sentence, which called for Nguyen to be eligible for release in 2017, saying it was not harsh enough. The panel of three judges agreed, ruling Nguyen would stay imprisoned until at least 2023.
