ORLANDO, Fla. —An Orlando woman received a big check Thursday because of unclaimed property that she didn’t even know existed.

The Bureau of Unclaimed Property gave Teresa Tran, 26, a check for over $40,000.
“I’m giving this all to my mother. I’m not taking a penny, I’m giving it all to her,” Tran said.
Tran’s mother had started two different mutual funds in Tran’s name that amassed to $40,581.50. The state took custody of the money after it was untouched for at least three years.
“We came from Vietnam with nothing, we’re a tight-knit family, so we’ve always tried to support each other and that’s the beauty of being in the States that we’re able to do that and we’re able to live this American dream in a sense,” Tran said.
