Vietnam’s rights record does not warrant lethal weapons sale

A coalition of 10 independent civil society organizations on Aug 11 sent a joint letter to U.S. Senators John McCain and Sheldon Whitehouse, telling them that Vietnam’s deteriorating human rights record does not warrant the sales of lethal weapons to the communist government.

The two senators on their visit to Hanoi had suggested that the U.S. should accelerate the resumption of lethal weapons sales. The senators cited Vietnam’s accession to the U.N. Convention Against Torture as a sign of improvement in human rights.
