Mother sets daughter on fire in Vietnam for $17.86 lottery debt

It is an unspeakable horror when mothers, who live to protect their children, are the ones that do the harming. That is the case with a young girl in the province of Binh Thuan in Vietnam is dealing with. Her monther burned her by pouring gasoline on her after she failed to sell all of the lottery tickets to help the family. Nguyen Thi Kim Linh, 12, sold lottery tickets to help her mother, Truong Thi Vy, 35, make ends meet.

Nguyen came home with five unsold tickets and accrued a $17.86 debt with the lottery agent. When asked why she hadn’t sold them, Nguyen remained silent, infuriating her mother. She then splashed her daughter with the gasoline and set her on fire.The burning girl then rushed to hug her mother in what appeared to be an instinctive reaction to her pain and set Truong on fire as well.


A neighbor saw the two on fire and immediately rushed to help them with water. Nguyen suffered third degree burns on 38% of her body while her mother suffered 10%.
