The promotional poster for the 1986 movie Platoon was based upon Greenspon’s photograph.
It’s been called “the best photo from Vietnam.” An American paratrooper guides the pilot of a medical evacuation helicopter through the Vietnam jungle as it attempts to land to pick up casualties in South Vietnam in April 1968. The photographer who shot the photo, Art Greenspon, has his own story as a veteran of covering war. And as his work his revisited as the cover photo of the Associated Press’ soon-to-be-released book “Vietnam: The Real War,” TIME magazine caught up with Greenspon.
