For the second year running, Phong Tran has struck gold at the state taekwondo titles.

That success has the 17-year-old’s sights set firmly on the national championships in Sydney in August and, if all goes to plan, the World Poomsae Championships in Mexico in October.
The Flemington teen took to the sport in 2011, initially to learn self-defence and get active, but since an instructor at Essendon’s Dans Martial Arts suggested Phong enter a taekwondo competition, he hasn’t looked back.
Phong won gold in the individual black belt 15-17 age group and the pairs event, siding with partner Tanisha Del Santo, at last month’s Sports Taekwondo Australia Victorian championship.
