At the culmination of a three-day protest against the use of American tax money to support the war, the Vietnam Moratorium Committee sponsored a march from Purdue University to the steps of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse for a rally.

Two Purdue University students opened an anti-Vietnam war rally on the steps of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse by singing protest songs. (Journal & Courier)


Two Purdue students opened the rally by singing protest songs. Five people spoke to a crowd made up of mostly Purdue students. Similar protests were observed throughout the nation.


Steve Spurlock, representing a new organization called Veterans for Peace, spoke first and was followed by the Rev. Donald Jordan of the Lafayette Church of the Brethren, Joe Stockdale of West Lafayette High School, Mike Hogan, a former Marine in Vietnam, and David Cady, a history professor at Purdue.


To counteract the antiwar activities, the Purdue chapter of the Young Americans for Freedom sponsored a speech in the Memorial Union by Nguyen Ngoc Bich, the second secretary of information and culture of the South Vietnam embassy.
