Vets’ group sponsoring essay contest

  Students in the fourth through sixth grades who live in California’s Santa Clarita Valley are eligible to enter an essay contest about the importance of the Vietnam War in history. It’s part of a visit of the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall to the area, scheduled for Sept. 26-29.

 The wall, which is a replica of the war memorial in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to visit the Westfield Valencia Town Center.

 The Friendly Valley Veterans Club is using the visit as a learning tool for the local youngsters through its contest. All essays must answer the question, “Why was the Vietnam War important to America?”

 Submissions should be 500 to 700 words and typed, double-spaced on 8 1/2-by-11 inch paper. To enter, students should send their works to [email protected] or drop off their entries at libraries in in Santa Clarita, Stevenson Ranch, Castaic or Acton/Agua Dulce.

 Entry deadline is Sept. 9. The winning essays will be published in a local newspaper.
