The Vietnam Veterans Experience, a new attraction at this year’s York Fair, brings an acute reminder to visitors: There are lots of vets in the area who served during that turbulent time.

A map of Vietnam that the fair obtained from National Geographic is covered in more than 250 red pins that fairgoers have tacked on since Friday to represent their service. Some are even strewn throughout the sea for the Navy vets.
But no one wanted to place the first pin, said fair president Gene Schenck.
“Nobody wanted to be brash enough to be pin No. 1,” he said.
