GoFundMe account created to aid kidnapped driver Long Ma recover

WESTMINSTER, Calif.– After going through the harrowing experience of being held hostage for nearly a week by three escaped inmates, Huntington Beach resident Jenni Harvey, 44, is hoping to ease the burden for taxi driver Long Ma, 71. Harvey created a GoFundMe account on behalf of Ma, having followed the story of the prison break and finding out how close it hit to home.

“The story  touched me,” Harvey said. “I was thankful he was safe and when i read the article that he was back at work already, I thought maybe he needed to take some time off or take a moment to reflect on what happened.”
Harvey read the story about Ma’s ordeal in the Los Angeles Times and said she kept seeing comments that someone should set up a GoFundMe account for Ma, but no one did.

“I kept waiting for someone to do it, but eventually I decided to do it,” said Harvey. “I contacted KTLA’s Eric Spillman and asked if they had a way to get in contact with Ma and get permission. He directed me to the LA Times reporter Anh Do and she was able to contact him for permission. I figured it could be any one of us, that could have been in his place.”

Harvey has never started a GoFundMe account before but said she picked a goal of $3,000 thinking it would be a good start for him to be able to get his life back on track and regroup. So far, the campaign has raised over $1,165 in one day.

“I wanted to show there are some horrible people there are also people who are kind and want to reach out and help,” Harvey said. “The saddest thing for me about his whole ordeal was that he had no family, and that no one reported him missing.”
