BEIJING — Basketball sensation Jeremy Lin and Volvo have agreed on a two-year endorsement deal that will have Lin promote the automaker worldwide, with an emphasis on Asia.

Volvo, which is Chinese owned, said Lin’s work as an endorser will focus on the United States, China and other Asian markets where Chinese is spoken.

China has emerged as a major market for the National Basketball Association, with its players growing in popularity there. LeBron James of the Miami Heat has signed on to pitch the Baskin-Robbins and Dunkin’ Donuts brands in Asia.

Lin has become a breakout start for the New York Knicks this season. A native of California, Lin is the first NBA player born in the U.S. of Chinese or Taiwanese heritage.

Volvo said Lin could start appearing in commercials for the company as soon as June.
