A Pittsburgh man was behind bars Friday night after authorities discovered that the man had allegedly raped, assaulted and tormented his ex-girlfriends for nearly two decades. Authorities first opened an investigation into Cuong Nguyen on Jan. 1 after reports were made that he had allegedly killed animals on his property in the city’s Sheraden neighborhood.

Detectives said that’s when his ex-girlfriend launched into a story about the chronic abuse and claimed Nguyen tried to kill her by poisoning her in 2013, when she spent five days in a hospital. According to court documents, the woman feared Nguyen because he was armed.
The woman, 32, told police she has known Nguyen since she was 15 and the abuse started then. She said they lived together and on many nights while she was sleeping, Nguyen would choke her awake and force her to have sex. Other times, she said, he would beat her until she was awake and then rape her.
She told investigators the abuse stopped in 2006 after she became pregnant, but Nguyen started what he called “awakening sessions” again a month after the child was born in February 2007. She said the abuse stopped again in 2009 after Nguyen was arrested on drug charges and was sent to prison. After he was released in 2013, the abuse resumed.
Officers said Nguyen feared for her life because she witnessed him killing their dogs and was scared he would do the same to her. Records revealed that Nguyen in 2008 was the lead defendant in a massive marijuana trafficking case. He faced federal drug charges in connection with a $1 million marijuana operation that originated in Canada and was distributed in the Pittsburgh area. Nguyen ultimately pleaded guilty and spent 33 months in a federal prison.
Nguyen was arrested and charged with rape, sexual assault, two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, simple assault and unlawful restraint.
