Viet Nam traffic police limited in how much money they can keep with them

Traffic police in Viet Nam’s central highlands may not carry more than just a few cents in their pockets, according to media reports. It’s part of an effort to reduce corruption and keep officers from accepting bribes from motorists.

The traffic officers must report the amount of money they have to their supervisors, and if they need to have more than that amount for off-duty activities after work, they must report what they have with them.

This is the latest in a number of regulations for police officers. They also are banned, for instance, from using cell phones while on duty wearing sunglasses or putting their hands in their pockets.

A recent survey by Transparency International named the police as the most corrupt of 12 agencies in the country.
