He denied his work was not good enough saying he had done a “beautiful job”.

His 21-year-old victim described him as being “like the devil”. During the incident, Pham locked the door to the shop, stopping the two women and two younger customers from leaving. The court heard he became aggressive and pushed Anais Petherick with two hands.

Anais Petherick complained her nails had not been done to satisfaction despite several attempts by Pham. He then asked his wife, Thamh Thu Thi Nguyen, who owns the shop, to attempt the nails once more. She tried twice, but when Pham tried for an eighth time, the customer said she would not be paying. That’s when Pham locked the door and refused to let Petherick and her companions out. Eventually, after 30 minutes, the ordeal ended. Pham admitted to feeling angry but said he felt he had to protect his business.

Pham denied any intention of assault and said he believed Anais Petherick was trying to avoid paying. A pre-sentence report will be prepared on Pham before sentencing which is due to take place at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on December 10.
