The misidentification of people of descent from India ― confusing them with “American Indians,” or Native Americans ― has prompted New York Police Chief Raymond Kelly to issue a memo clarifying the difference between Indians from America and Indians from Asia. Confusion over officers’ descriptions on reports could lead to officers pursuing the wrong suspect or to the department failing to recognize crime patterns.
