With four kids and her own full-time dental practice in Houston, Duyen Nguyen doesn’t have much time to get dolled up before a gala. But she does shop ahead when possible, looking for eclectic pieces she can add to a formal look.

Take a black, feathered collar created for her by friend and New York-based designer Gemma Kahng. The show-stopping piece has been in Nguyen’s closet since early this year, but she hadn’t found the right occasion to debut it, she said.
For the recent Asian American Family Services gala at Hotel ZaZa, Nguyen finally wore it with a simple red Tom Ford gown.
“I shop for really unique and different pieces, then I save them in my closet and wear it when I feel the mood. I have to feel it, though.”
As gala season gets into full swing, she’ll pull out her Hermès clutches and favorite Saint Laurent pieces, like the black feather dress with plunging back cleavage from Saint Laurent’s fall collection. She hopes to wear the dress at the Operation Smile’s celebrity-studded Smile Gala in Los Angeles on Sept. 27.
