I’d like to think that the Walt Disney Animation Studio has been making a comeback, especially in the fairy tale department. With the box office disappointment that was The Princess and the Frog, they have succeeded with their last two CG-animated offerings, Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph. Not only were they box office successes, but they were both critically well-received.
Disney’s Frozen is one of those movies with a lackluster trailer, and I feared that it was going to share the same fate as Brave (I thought Brave‘s trailer and film were meh). If you enjoyed Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph, I believe you’re definitely going to enjoy this fairy tale animated musical.
The movie takes place in a kingdom long ago and sets up the sister/sister relationship with Elsa (Wicked‘s Idina Menzel) and Anna (Fanboys‘ Kristen Bell). Elsa’s life turns sour once she accidentally injures Anna due to her not being able to control her icy powers. Because of this, she has to be “cold” to her sister to prevent the accident from happening again. As a princess, Anna has been living a sheltered and lonely life (Tangled, anyone?), but she gets excited once Elsa has a coronation to be queen.
Men and women from all over are invited to attend, and it’s Anna’s chance to finally meet the love of her life. She falls for a very charming and handsome prince, Hans (Santino Fontana). After a very fun and romantic night, he asks for her hand in marriage. To get approval, he goes up to and asks Elsa, but she refuses, making Anna upset. This leads to the two sisters arguing, thus giving Elsa a panic attack. What happens when a person with powerful ice spells gets a panic attack? Well, let’s just say things won’t end well for the kingdom. She flees the kingdom that has been covered in ice and hides out in the mountains, creating her very own ice castle and ice gown. Now it’s up to Anna to find her sister and save the kingdom from an eternal winter. She meets Kristoff (Glee‘s Jonathan Groff), a stranger who works in the ice business. Since the kingdom is in winter, he won’t be needed anymore because ice will be readily available.
