At 14, Wylie has created her own line of clothing called Far Above Rubies. She crafts her designs from salvaged materials she finds at yard sales and thrift stores, turning them into shirts and accessories that reflect a young, eclectic style.

She took a break from preparing for the runway show – and from homework – to talk more about her designs.

Q: How did you get interested in designing clothes?

A: “I always knew I loved fashion and dressing up in my old dance outfits. Then I took a couple of sewing classes and became interested in creating my own things, so I thought I would give it a try.”

Q: How did you pick the name of your fashion line?

A: “Far Above Rubies comes from Proverbs 31:10 – ‘for her worth is far above rubies.’ My mom and I thought of a list of names, but I liked this one the most because Far Above Rubies designs are repurposed from unwanted materials and have value, just like the verse says.”

Q: How would you describe your design aesthetic?

A: “My designs look is repurposed, green, casual and playful, and fun to wear.”
