WESTMINSTER, Calif. – It sure is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

On Monday, Westminster Mayor Tri Ta and Santa Claus flipped the switch to illuminate the city’s Christmas tree, setting off a festive night of song and dance at the annual tree-lighting ceremony.
“It is really joyful to be with the city of Westminster every year during the holidays to share the spirit and cheer,” Mayor Ta said.
The smell of hot chocolate and marshmallows filled the air as acts from seven community organizations performed in front of a small crowd under the stars at the quad by City Hall.

Parents watched as their children entertained the crowd on a chilly night. The children sang classics such as “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells.”
“I am happy to sing in front of everyone and my mom, and I get to see Santa light the tree,” said Jose Gonzalez, 10, from the Bethany Christian Choir. “The lighting of the tree means Christmas is just a few days away, and I can’t wait for Santa to bring me a present.”

Mary Gonzalez, Jose’s mother, sang along with the children.
“It’s a fun event to start the holidays, and it’s the first time for my son to participate in this event,” she said.
For some, the tree-lighting event is an annual, and anticipated, tradition.
“Every year, I look forward to this event because the city gathers together to be one family who shares the same meaning of the holidays,” said Diana Carey, a member of the Westminster council.
