Coastline Community College Celebrates Third Year of Partnership on the APIASF Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution Scholarship Program

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA – January 26, 2015 – The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) announced plans to award 12 full-time, degree-seeking Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students at Coastline Community College with scholarships totaling $45,000. The APIASF Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) Scholarship Program partnered with 15 institutions, including Coastline Community College, to accelerate the success of some of the highest concentrations of underserved AAPI students.

The APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship Program is a collaboration of AANAPISIs, a federal designation of minority-serving institutions that enroll large populations of AAPI students, and the communities they serve to provide scholarships, expand institutional capacity and mobilize local resources to help foster economic development. AANAPISIs serve disproportionately high concentrations of low-income AAPI students – this collaboration reaches some of the highest concentrations of underserved students.

Over the last five years, the APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship Program has supported over 500 scholars and distributed over $1.7 million in college scholarships. This year, the APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship Program added six new campus partners. This program contributes to increased persistence and degree attainment for traditionally underserved students. Since 2010, 83 percent of AANAPISI Scholars have graduated or are still enrolled in their college programs, 25 percent have received associate degrees and 29 percent have transferred from 2-year to 4-year institutions.

“APIASF is excited to continue its partnership with, Coastline Community College, for the third year through the APIASF AANAPISI Scholarship program. With more than 40 percent of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders enrolled in higher education attending an AANAPISI campus, this partnership provides an opportunity to support AAPI students in California and allow them to gain access to financial and support services – ultimately helping them to earn a quality education and degree,” said APIASF President & Executive Director Neil Horikoshi.

“Coastline is honored to have such a strong partnership with APIASF,” said JP Bareng Schumacher, Project Director of Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI). “The work that we are doing together makes such a difference in the lives of so many Coastline students and their families.”

The AANAPISI Scholarship Program is supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation, Educational Testing Service, General Mills Foundation, Hilton Worldwide, Honda, USA Funds, Walmart Foundation and Wells Fargo.
