Proposed bill could provide 100 million meals for the hungry

America is the land of the free and home of the brave. However, it is also home to waste: In 2012, the U.S. wasted 35 million tons of food! However, a new bill introduced on Earth Day called “America Gives More” act would allow small businesses, farmers and restaurants to donate excess, unusable food and write it off as a tax deduction.

This deduction is currently only available to big corporations. Most small farmers cannot afford to ship and transport their perfectly good, but misshapen produce to organizations that can give them away and instead, send them to the dumpster.

The House passed the bill in February and is currently waiting for the Senate’s decision.
