On June 2, 2014, Do brought a five-liter can of gasoline with him to Dang’s house. He then pushed Dang back into the house as she was leaving and threw gasoline on her body before lighting her on fire.

Dang’s older sister Lien and her husband heard Dang’s scream and ran to the scene. Lien, Dang’s sister was also caught by the fire right after that. Lien’s husband, Tung Nguyen, tried to take Lien and Trinh to the toilet for help, but Do chased them, stabbing Trinh and Tung several times with a knife.

After that,  Do climbed on the roof, attempting to flee. However, local police and some neighbors had joined to seize him.

The victims were rushed to the hospital with severe bleeding injuries and burns. Dang, who is 24, had more than half of her body badly burnt in the fire. Dang told the court that the relationship between her and Nam had ended two months before the incident, after the man showed many signs of overcoming jealousy.
