Think lavatories are the dirtiest place on a plane? Think again

Planes are notorious for being a breeding ground for bacteria but you’d be surprised to know that the much maligned toilet is actually not the dirtiest.

Hundreds of passengers spend their time in a very confined space, eating, sleeping, sneezing, using the bathroom and spreading their bacteria all over the inside of the aircrafts, which are not always sanitized between flights. Travelmath sent a microbiologist to explore both airports and airplanes, testing a variety of items that we normally use to come up with a list of the dirtiest ones of all, based on “colony-forming units.”

The dirtiest places on the plane are: The tray table, the overhead air vent, the lavatory flush button and the seatbelt buckle! All things we generally make contact with on the plane. The study says the tray table is especially dirty since some people change babies’ diapers on them. Wiping it down with an antibacterial wipe is suggested. The flush button is considered dirtier than the actual toilet itself, so using toilet paper or something to flush is highly recommended.  Lastly, the seatbelt buckle is highly bacteria laden because everything you touch during the flight, you leave on the belt buckle as you get up to leave. That means you leave for someone what they left for you earlier. All in all the best idea is to wash your hands and be as mindful as possible before you take to the friendly skies.
