When police responded to the scene they found the woman stabbed in the head, but still alive, and their children unharmed.
Thang Van Nguyen, 46, went to the Garden Grove Fire Department, 11301 Acacia Parkway, next to the Police Department about 6:45 a.m. The incident occurred because of marital problems the couple were having.
Nguyen was detained before he took police to the family’s downstairs apartment in the 12700 block of Flower Street.
Officers found his wife, Huong Nguyen, stabbed in the head with a large meat cleaver multiple times, but she was still conscious.
Garden Grove Fire Department paramedics went to the apartment at 7:20 a.m. and took Huong Nguyen, 44, to UCI Medical Center in Orange in critical condition. The apartment is about 1.5 miles from the fire and police stations.
Police said the couple’s 7-year old boy witnessed the attack; their 19-year-old son was home but did not see the stabbing. Thang Nguyen was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
