Interest forms will be available at all Garden Grove Unified School District elementary schools beginning Monday for participation in the new “Transitional Kindergarten” program scheduled to begin in September.

Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program for children who will turn 5 years old between Nov. 2 and Dec. 2, 2012.

Parents should visit their neighborhood, home elementary school for the Transitional Kindergarten interest form. A letter to parents will follow in the summer with official registration information and Transitional Kindergarten school locations.

Participation in the free Transitional Kindergarten program is voluntary. The district, however, encourages the enrollment of all eligible children because an additional year of learning will provide a stronger foundation for building academic success in school.

Transitional Kindergarten will feature a modified kindergarten curriculum with lessons that are age and developmentally appropriate. The daily, half-day sessions will include whole-group and small-group discussion, as well as independent and hands-on learning. Fully credentialed teachers will expose children to reading and math using proven techniques to teach about words and sentences, and help them understand mathematical concepts such as counting, quantity, and patterns.

Information on elementary school attendance areas is available from the district Office of Student Services at (714) 663-6391 and online at www.ggusd.k12.ca.us/locator/school_search.asp.

For additional information about the Transitional Kindergarten program, contact the district’s Clinton Corner Family Campus at (714) 663-6298.
