Haller defeat Nguyen to capture gold for Thailand in taekwondo

Cassandra Haller won Thailand’s only gold medal on the second day of taekwondo yesterday.

Cassandra Haller celebrates winning gold in the women’s 67kg division.


There were three Thai exponents in yesterday’s finals but Cassandra was the country’s only successful athlete.



The 22-year-old Thai-Swiss beat Thanh Hien Nguyen of Vietnam 11-2 in the women’s 67kg final in her first international competition since 2011.



Chetrapee Tanjai lost 10-7 to Phoumthamsone Thammavong of Laos in the men’s 68kg final, while Worawong Pongpanit suffered a 7-1 loss to Jade Zafra of the Philippines in the women’s 57kg.



Cassandra, who won gold at the 2007 Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, said that she had not expected to get gold at the Myanmar tournament.
