South Asian election bodies for voter education in school curriculum

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Forum of Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) has decided to take initiative to introduce electoral/voter education curriculum at the school level in South Asian countries.

Issuing a 10-point Kathmandu resolution, the fifth meeting of the FEMBoSA that concluded in Kathmandu on Sunday made such a decision.


The two-day meeting has reaffirmed FEMBOSA´s commitment to ensure free and fair elections promoting participatory and inclusive democracy in the region.


Organizing a press meet after the meeting, officials of the Election Commission informed about the decisions taken by the South Asia election management bodies.


“The meeting accepted inclusion and participation of eligible electors as the cornerstone of free and fair elections,” reads the press statement.


“We have concluded that media´s role is constructive and proactive for election management, the meeting decided to set up a common standard for media monitoring during the election period,” Spokesman for the Election Commission Bir Bahadur Rai said. He informed that campaign/political finance regulation is essential for fair, free, transparent and effective election management.


“The voter education is part of Nepal´s current school level curriculum but this is not enough,” Spokesman Rai told Republica following the meeting.
