In 2012, Tri Ta became the first Vietnamese American mayor in the United States. Now he has another distinction – the first Vietnamese mayor to be elected twice.

He defeated his relatively unknown opponent, 24-year-old freelance journalist Andy Truc Nguyen, receiving 84.7percent approval from Westminster voters, according to unofficial results from the Orange County Registrar.
“I am so honored and happy,” Ta said about his new two-year term. “I truly believe we can continue to move Westminster forward, and I will continue to do my best for everyone in the community.”
Ta’s re-election was seen largely as a formality, as his opponent skipped a candidate’s forum and did little campaigning. Ta is also popular in a city that is 39.7percent Vietnamese, according to the most recent Census data.
