HANOI — The United Nations (UN) pledged to support Vietnam in ensuring and promoting human rights through the 2012-2016 UN One Plan, said UN Resident Coordinator Pratibha Mehta on Tuesday.

Addressing the launching of the Universal Periodic Review’s ( UPR) Vietnam report in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi on Tuesday, Mehta said the election of Vietnam to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the term 2014-2016 is proof of the country’s active participation in recent international human rights initiatives.
The UNHRC membership means Vietnam will be held to the highest possible human rights standards, Vietnam’s state-run radio online Voice of Vietnam quoted the UN official as saying.
Hoang Chi Trung, dead of the Department for International Organizations under Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said a high number of votes for Vietnam’s UNHRC membership testified to the international community’s recognition for the country’s achievements in human right works.
