The
Health Ministry has recommended that the government provide support to families
with two daughters in an effort to balance the country’s gender ratio,
according to media reports.
Vietnamese
families should qualify to receive financial support in the form of tuition and
health insurance when they have the second girl, Nguyen Van Tan, deputy chief
of General Office for Population and Family Planning at the ministry, was
quoted as saying.
The
recommendation came as part of a project to curb the country’s gender imbalance
that the Health Ministry has recently submitted to the government for approval
Other
suggested measures included more strongly enforcing the prohibition of sex
selection in babies.
According
to Tan, Viet Nam’s sex ratio last year was 112.3 boys to 100 girls, “a strong
increase” from the previous year, adding that it was worse in some Red River
Delta provinces, where the ratio reached up to 130 boys to 100 girls
