The Philippines government is likely to award the government tender to Vietnam for the supply of 500,000 tons of rice to help meet domestic demand after rice stocks with the National Food Authority (NFA) dropped in the aftermath of cyclone Haiyan, local sources say.
Vietnam is expected to be selected for the import of rice due to low prices, NFA representatives told local sources today. While Cambodia did not participate in the government tender, Thailand government representatives offered to supply 25% broken long grain well-milled rice for $475 per ton (free on warehouse basis). However, Vietnam offered the same quality rice for just $462.25 per ton, and may reduce prices in the ongoing negotiations. Vietnam is expected to ship the rice by December 31, 2013.
