Two babysitters accused of abusing children in a case that caused a public outcry across Vietnam have been arrested, a police official said Wednesday. Nguyen Le Thien Ly, 19, and Le Thi Dong Phuong, 31, were arrested on charges of “torturing children,” said lieutenant Colonel Doan Van Phe of Saigon police.
The arrest came after a video clip posted online appeared to show the two babysitters – who worked at an unauthorised kindergarten – abusing children in their care.
The women in the clip were shown beating them, strangling them and holding them upside down over a barrel of water, threatening to drop them into it.
Police said the two women admitted the abuse, but said in their defence that they only did it when the children refused to be fed, ate and drank slowly, or vomited.
