Bad news for some bird farmers in Vietnam — they just reported an outbreak of the H5N6 strain of the bird flu in the province of Thanh Hoa. Just last week, over 350 birds were infected in Tinh Gia district, with close to 700 birds culled for safety.
When the bird flu outbreak happened years ago, it caused widespread panic for those living in Southeast Asia where the H5N1 strain originated and caused hundreds of confirmed deaths.

The H5N6 strain of bird flu, along with the H5N1 are not transferred through human to human contact. The virus is spread through direct contact with poultry, whether through handling of or eating infected birds. About 60% of people infected with the virus died from their illness.
