Can the CDC help make Little Saigon smoke free? Possibly

If all goes to plan, in three years, the number of smokers in Little Saigon A Westminster nonprofit is launching a three-year effort to reduce the number of smokers among the Vietnamese community in Orange County.

The project is multifaceted and has several focuses including getting commercial plazas in Little Saigon to enforce anti-smoking laws and policies and to cut down the number of smokers.

The program is being funded by a $2.9 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will work with non-profit groups such as Boat People SOS


Vietnamese-Americans are more likely to be smokers than the rest of the U.S. population, according to the CDC.
In 2009, more than 31 percent of Vietnamese-American men in California smoked cigarettes, second only to Koreans. That compared to the national average of 20.5 percent of men.
