Every day, 9 women living in Vietnam will die from cervical cancer. Those numbers are alarming, considering this disease is preventable with early detection and yearly pap smears.

However, in Vietnam many women eschew regular health checkups. Also, many women who live in remote villages lack the resources to get vaccinations for HPV which can lead to cervical cancer. That’s why the Institute for Reproductive and Family Health and the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation got together and hosted a conference in Hanoi to try and educate women on the importance of regular check-ups and preventative measures.
Research shows that cervical cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Vietnamese women in the US, whereas breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer for all other racial and ethnic groups. Vietnamese American women have an incidence rate of cervical cancer that is five times higher than that of Caucasian women, meaning even in America where there is access to health care.
