BANGSTYLE: What made you choose to be a stylist? Where there other careers you considered before?
Dat Tran: I didn’t choose be a stylist, it actually just came into my life. I studied computer science in high school and college, realized I didn’t want to sit in front of a computer all day, I changed over to business administrative. During those times, I had a bunch of other jobs from book keeping to welding, and as a cook, which I loved and thought I was going to make it a career. Growing up with my mother who was a hairstylist, I would help out here and there. It was when I came back from the prairies in my early twenties and my mother saw me doing nothing and offered me a job in the salon. That is where it started and grew from there.
BANGSTYLE: If you could have anyone in your chair and be given complete freedom with their hair, who would it be and what would you do?
Dat Tran: Alex Box the make up artist. I had a chance to work with her and she has this bigger than life approach to make up. I would love to create an Avant Garde hairstylist that would suit her personality.
BANGSTYLE: What would you tell the younger you? What advice would you give yourself?
Dat Tran: To be patient “It’s a journey not a race.”
BANGSTYLE: What is the most surprising thing you have found about the career of hair?
Dat Tran: That I was good at! I never image that I can create that type of hair styles and the people I get to work with!
BANGSTYLE: What was the most nerve-racking moment in your career?
Dat Tran: When Kevin Murphy himself ask me up to the stage to help him out with the models for the Shoot.Me workshop.
BANGSTYLE: What is the most fun you’ve had on a shoot?
Dat Tran: I always have fun on shoot. Being able to be part of a creative process is where I have the most fun.
