Gang related shooting kills 19-year-old in Santa Ana

A young man lost his life just after the new year in what authorities are saying is a gang-related incident. Phung Dinh Le was shot in the head early Sunday morning and later died at the hospital.

Le, 19,  of Garden Grove was driving around 2 a.m. Sunday with his friends westbound in the 2800 block of West Edinger Avenue when a car full of gang members pulled alongside them authorities said.

“A light-colored compact vehicle pulled up alongside the victim vehicle and words were exchanged,” Smith said. “A passenger from the suspect vehicle fired a handgun at the victim vehicle, striking one of the passengers.”

It was unclear how many people were in either car.

Officials said Le was shot in the head and taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, in critical condition. He was taken off life support at 3:47 p.m. Sunday and his organs were donated.

No arrests were initially made, but police are asking anyone with information about the attack to contact the Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS. Information can be provided anonymously.
