Garden Grove council erases black mark

Things are already looking up for Garden Grove as the new City Council took action in its first meeting to roll back one of the more recent, and ill-advised, decisions made by the previous council.

The council voted a few months ago to deny Black Umbrella Art Studio, a hybrid art gallery and tattoo shop, from opening along the city’s historic Main Street; its reasoning sounded more like generational differences over tattoos than a true grievance worthy of government intervention.


However, the new, and younger, council voted last week to reverse that decision and grant the shop, which offers an art studio in front and tattoo parlor in back, the right to open.


“What I see is a property owner … leasing his property to an applicant,” Mayor Bao Nguyen said.


Mr. Nguyen is right, and such a simple, yet clear, endorsement of the rights of property owners to use their property as they choose, free of unjustified governmental input, is pleasing to hear.
