Garden Grove may not host a Tet festival in 2016

It’s hard to imagine Garden Grove without a Tet festival but this year might just be the first time in 30 years that is the case.

The city received a proposal from the Vietnamese Community of Southern California, which hosted the annual Lunar New Year celebration in Garden Grove Park the last two years but have not processed the application.

The group still owes the city @27,000 and have not turned in documents for this years audit. The city is open to other nonprofits but have not received any other offers. The deadline is Oct. 29.

In addition, the competition from veteran organizers, the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations, who moved their festival to Costa Mesa, makes it hard to turn a profit.

Even if no other group submits a proposal, it is unlikely the city will allow the Vietnamese Community of Southern California to host the next festival.

A majority of the City Council has said the city cannot afford the financial risk, especially with Garden Grove spending $4 million from its savings to balance the budget this fiscal year.
