As a white-bred American from Ohio, when I came to college I was ready to take on the world. I wanted to see diversity and co-mingle with those of exotic other races. However, as I walked into Irmagarde Tator Hall on move in day I was a little taken aback by what I saw. My roommate was Caucasian!

Don’t get me wrong, my parents were thrilled, but I was bummed out. He was about as Caucasian as it gets – his name was John Smith. I explicitly remember filling in “Asian” anywhere I could during the roommate selection process, including boxes for my name and address. Now how am I going to pass any of my classes without the help of an Asian buddy?
