It’s official: Rep. Loretta Sanchez running for U.S. Senate

On an overcast Thursday morning at the Santa Ana train station, Rep. Loretta Sanchez formally declared her intent to run for the U.S. Senate among close friends and family. Senator Barbara Boxer announced in January that she would not run for a fifth term next year.

As a Deomcrat, Sanchez faces tough competition from California Attorney General Kamala Harris, who is considered the frontrunner in the Democratic primary.

If Sanchez, 55, wins, she would be the first Latina ever elected to the U.S. Senate, and the first Hispanic American sent to the chamber from California.

Sanchez has some catching up to do – Harris has been busy campaigning since January and Sanchez has never run in a statewide campaign. Sanchez is serving her 10th term in the House and won in 1996 by defeating Republican incumbent Bob Dornan.  She also serves on the House Armed Services and Homeland Security committees, experience that Harris does not have.

Sanchez said she made the decision to run after getting encouragement from colleagues, business groups and Vietnamese-Americans in California.
